If you’ve decided to look for a therapist in Katy, TX, you’ve already done the hardest part. Acknowledging you want support and committing to do something about it takes real courage.
But what comes next can feel overwhelming. There are dozens of therapists in Katy alone, hundreds more across Houston, and a confusing maze of credentials, insurance networks, modalities, and specialties to navigate. Where do you even start?
I’m Ohonmi Belo-Osagie, LCSW, founder of Reveille Therapy in Katy. Over my career I’ve helped many clients who started by saying, I tried looking, but it was just too much, so I gave up. This guide is meant to make sure that doesn’t happen to you.
Here’s a step-by-step process you can actually follow.
Step 1: Get Clear on What You’re Looking For
Before you start searching, take 10 minutes to answer these questions. The clearer you are, the easier the search becomes.
Who is therapy for?
- Just you (individual therapy)
- You and a partner (couples therapy)
- Your family (family therapy)
- A child or teen
- A group setting
What are you hoping to work on? It doesn’t have to be specific. Some honest options:
- A specific challenge (anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, relationship issue)
- A life transition (divorce, new baby, career change, loss)
- Long-standing patterns you want to understand
- Just feeling off without a clear reason
- Personal growth without a specific issue
What logistics matter to you?
- In-person, telehealth, or both?
- Daytime, evening, or weekend availability?
- Male, female, or no preference?
- Specific cultural, religious, or identity considerations?
What’s your budget?
- Using insurance, paying out of pocket, or sliding scale?
You don’t need a perfect answer to all of these just a rough sense. It’ll save you hours of scrolling.
Step 2: Verify Texas Licensure
This is non-negotiable. In Texas, anyone calling themselves a therapist or counselor should be licensed by the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council (the Council oversees the boards for social work, counseling, marriage/family therapy, and psychology).
Common licenses you’ll see in Katy:
- LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker): Master’s-level clinician fully licensed for independent practice
- LMSW (Licensed Master Social Worker): Master’s-level, typically practicing under supervision
- LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor): Master’s-level fully licensed
- LPC-Associate: Master’s-level, under supervision
- LMFT (Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist): Master’s-level, family systems focused
- Psychologist (PhD or PsyD): Doctoral-level, often does assessments
- Psychiatrist (MD): Medical doctor who can prescribe medication
All of these can provide quality therapy. Don’t get hung up on letters what matters is fit and specialty.
To verify any therapist’s license:
- Go to the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council license search
- Search by last name
- Confirm: license is active, no disciplinary actions
Red flag: If a therapist doesn’t display their license number on their website or refuses to share it, walk away. Licensed clinicians have nothing to hide.
Step 3: Decide About Insurance vs. Self-Pay
This step often determines who you can see.
If you want to use insurance:
- Check the back of your insurance card for the mental health benefits phone number (sometimes a separate number from medical)
- Call and ask: Can you give me a list of in-network therapists in Katy, TX?
- Ask about your copay, deductible, and any session limits
Common insurance plans in Katy:
- Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX)
- Aetna
- Cigna
- Carelon Behavioral Health (formerly Beacon)
- Anthem EAP
- United Healthcare / Optum
If you’re paying out of pocket:
You have more flexibility. Self-pay clients can see any licensed therapist. Most rates in Katy are $75–$200 per session. Many therapists offer sliding scale fees including Reveille Therapy.

Step 4: Match Specialty to Your Issue
Not every therapist treats every issue. A trauma specialist won’t necessarily be the best fit for couples therapy, and a couples specialist may not have deep training in OCD treatment.
When browsing therapist profiles, look for clear language about:
- Specialties they treat
- Populations they serve (adults, teens, couples, women, men, LGBTQ+, etc.)
- Modalities they’re trained in:
- CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy): practical, skills-based, strong for anxiety/depression
- DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy): emotion regulation, distress tolerance
- ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy): values-based, mindfulness
- EMDR: trauma processing
- Trauma-Informed Care: broad framework respecting trauma’s impact
- Gottman Method: couples specifically
- Internal Family Systems (IFS): parts work
You don’t need to be an expert in modalities. But if you’re seeking trauma therapy, look for someone with clear trauma training. If you want practical anxiety tools, look for CBT or ACT experience.
Step 5: Read Their Words Carefully
Most therapists have a website or directory profile (Psychology Today, TherapyDen, GoodTherapy, etc.). Read their bio and “what to expect” content carefully.
You’re looking for:
- Do their words feel warm, professional, real?
- Do they explain their approach in plain language (not jargon)?
- Do they seem like someone you could talk to?
- Do they have content that resonates with you?
Red flags:
- Promises of cures or guaranteed results
- No clear bio or photo
- Generic stock language with no personal voice
- Testimonials that feel fake or read like marketing copy
- No mention of their license
You’re trusting this person with your inner life. The way they communicate publicly tells you a lot about how they’ll communicate in session.
Step 6: Use the Free Consultation
Most quality therapists in Katy including Reveille Therapy offer a free 15-minute phone or video consultation before booking. Always use this. It’s the single best way to find good fit.
Questions to ask in your consultation:
- What’s your training and experience with [your specific issue]?
- What does a typical session with you look like?
- How do you measure progress?
- Do you accept my insurance? What are your self-pay rates?
- What’s your availability like and what’s the wait time for first appointment?
- Have you worked with people who share my [identity, background, religion, etc.] if relevant?
- What if I don’t feel like therapy is working how do you handle that?
You’re allowed to ask anything. A good therapist welcomes these questions.
Step 7: Trust Your Gut on Fit
After your consultation, ask yourself honestly:
- Did I feel heard?
- Did I feel comfortable opening up?
- Did this person take me seriously?
- Did I leave the call feeling more hopeful, or less?
Research consistently shows that the therapeutic relationship is the single biggest predictor of therapy outcomes bigger than any specific modality or credential. If the consultation feels off, it’s okay to keep looking. There are many great therapists out there. The right fit is worth the search.
It’s also okay to start with someone and switch if it’s not working after 3–4 sessions. A good therapist will support you in finding better fit if needed.
Where to Find Therapists in Katy, TX
The best places to search:
Directories:
- Psychology Today — largest, easy filtering
- TherapyDen — newer, free for therapists, modern filtering
- Inclusive Therapists — culturally responsive
- Therapy for Black Girls — specifically for Black women
- Open Path Collective — affordable rates ($40–$80/session)
Insurance company directory:
- Search your insurance member portal for in-network providers
Search by specialty:
- [Issue] therapist Katy TX (e.g., anxiety therapist Katy TX)
Word of mouth:
- Ask your primary care doctor for a referral
- Ask friends or family who’ve been to therapy (if you feel safe to)
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Mistake 1: Choosing based on price alone. A great fit at $130/session will get you results faster than a mediocre fit at $80.
Mistake 2: Picking the first available therapist out of urgency. It’s tempting when you’re struggling, but spending an extra week to find the right person will save months of mediocre therapy.
Mistake 3: Not being honest in the consultation. If you don’t share what you’re really struggling with, you can’t get matched well.
Mistake 4: Quitting after one session. Most clients feel a little awkward in their first session. Give it 3–4 sessions before deciding fit.
Mistake 5: Choosing someone whose credentials look impressive but doesn’t feel right. Fit > credentials.
What If I Can’t Afford Any Therapist?

- NAMI Texas Helpline: 1-800-950-NAMI
- Open Path Collective: $40–$80/session nationally
